StumbleUpon infiltrates the entire network
In just under seven months StumbleUpon, the best-known social bookmarking platform, changed ownership and reached 3.7 million users. It is not yet clear if it is worth all the 75 million dollars paid out by eBay for its acquisition, it is certain that the entourage of the small Californian company does not stop for a moment: yesterday it launched the new SearchReviews function.
In practice, all users subscribed to the StumbleUpon service in the last few hours have been able to witness the total integration of the rating system with Google News, Yahoo News, Flickr, Wikipedia and YouTube. The “reviews” made by users, therefore, magically appear also on Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL and Ask. Social bookmarking becomes an integral part of online browsing – as NewsBlog.com explains in great detail.
“Now you can have a large number of people saying Hey this is a great page, instead of just ranking the most popular pages,” explained Garrett Camp, co-founder of StumbleUpon. Simply activate the service by ticking the option in the “Toolbar Option”.
“If successful, Search Reviews could reach a critical mass capable of revolutionizing the way online popularity and therefore measurement tools are evaluated,” said Carla Thompson, product analyst at Guidewire Group. “However, it should dramatically expand its user base before it somehow affects the popularity it gains on YouTube.”
As Reuters recalls, the rating system is used to allow the immediate identification of quality links in compliance with different personal tastes. The stars, which indicate the overall evaluation of each web page, are in fact also accompanied by the icons of their friends / reviewers.
“We have a database related to a social network that no one else owns,” Camp argued. “In the future we can imagine that all web pages will show StumbleUpon Reviews.” According to Camp, the key to success would therefore be trust: trust placed in other users, and trust in the platform that needs to scan their own personal address book to identify their friends.
Some observers questioned the transparency of the integration system. Yet Thompson claims that there is nothing illegal: the overlapping of information takes place on the web pages of other sites through simple codes conveyed by the activation of the toolbar. Nothing more, nothing more than “social-reviewing”.
