When the mobile is a personal trainer
Why scramble for strenuous gym sessions when you can slip a personal trainer into your phone? This is the question that NTT DoCoMo and Mitsubishi asked themselves (and answered), who developed the Wellness Phone (the wellness phone), with the functionality of a personal trainer, coach and… secretary.
The device is equipped with sensors capable of detecting pulsations, measuring body fat mass, breathing rhythm and – declares NTT DoCoMo – it can calculate the calories burned during motion, realizing what type of activity the user performs: if he walks , if he runs, if he climbs the stairs or if he is resting. Also – explains the Tech-on portal! – provides indications and alarms in extreme conditions.
The device was presented only in prototype form and it is not known whether it will actually be commercialized. But the most undisciplined users, at least in terms of fitness, might find it interesting at the beginning, but unpleasant with the passage of time, if the alerts produced in correspondence with events not suited to a healthy lifestyle were to become too frequent: a mobile phone that every five minutes criticizes the user for his sedentary lifestyle could suddenly end up under his feet and turn into a step.
