Samsung widens the flexible display
Seoul (South Korea) – The technologies behind flexible displays are almost ready to land on the mass market. To say it is Samsung, which yesterday showed a flexible color TFT LCD screen with a 7-inch diagonal.
The Korean giant claims that its new prototype is the largest foldable screen in the world. Actually last month E-Ink and LG.Philips LCD showed a 10.1-inch model, but it is only capable of displaying 4 levels of gray.
Samsung’s LCD panel has a resolution of 640 x 480 dots and, according to the company, can already be used to view digital TV. The screen consists of a transparent plastic layer which, compared to traditional LCD displays, is thinner, lighter and more durable.
In the future, Samsung intends to use its flexible display in notebooks, mobile phones and wearable computers – in the latter case the screen could literally be sewn into clothes. At the moment, however, the company says it still has no plans to market its rollable LCD panels.
