Mobile phones in flight? For SMS and email only

Mobile phones in flight? For SMS and email only

If the mobile phone on scheduled flights is considered outlawed for privacy reasons, as telephone conversations can disturb passengers, this rule may be considered invalid for SMS. It is on this assumption that the famous Australian airline Qantas intends to continue with the experiments for the use of mobile phones in flight.

cnet reports that the airline is about to start a new three-month test phase on a Boeing 767, whose passengers will be able to use their mobile phones, but only to send and receive text messages and e-mails.

The initiative is part of a larger trial project announced last fall. The technologies implemented transform the aircraft – in all respects – into a foreign mobile network to which mobile phones can connect in roaming with rates that depend on the telephone operator active in the network itself.

Qantas is not alone in experimenting with the use of mobile phones on board aircraft: the Virgin Blue company is also willing to follow suit, ready to activate the service on an Australian domestic line. There are also countless companies engaged in various capacities in the world to provide more or less experimental mobile telephony services on the plane.
